WIth such short notice, I can accomodate only 10-15 min. for your presentation and a self-introduction. Questions will be followed... Bring your USB memory stick with your PPT slides copied. You are most welcome to audit the class until the end.. . You can present in English, too.

  • 1) Why you decided to be an English teacher,

  • As for polishing up the instruments and research methods, besides upgrading the students' motivation, you might want to look into the following areas.
  1. Split-half correlation (between odd and even numbered items) to compute Spearman-Brown correlation
  2. Kuder Richardson reliability K-21. Off hand, I can not explain the details here, but one of the web sites might be:
  1. 折半法による信頼性係数(Split-halves reliability coefficient).
  2. クロンバックのα係数(Cronbach's coefficient alpha).
  3. キューダー・リチャードソン信頼性係数(Kuder-Richardson reliability coefficient).

    I have my own program in AWK for item analysis and point-bi serial correlation, but you can probably find one or two on the web. I do not recommend running this until you find out who messed up the scores of vocabulary items.-- myasuda 2005-10-15 (土) 02:14:58
  • If I were you, I would not run a vocabulary test to examine their progress in English, after their learning to author web pages in English. Instead, I would meaasure their progress in writing maturity of a short paragraph or two (pre and post), under such topics as an intoduction of someone at school, students themselves, or whatever topics they might write in English web pages. The maturity progress measures are not necessarily quantitative varibales, a holistic evaluation. But you can run quantiative analysis by measuring such discrete items as:
    a) mean length of sentences
    b) token of words - same and frequency

    c) mean of the frequency of the words they use against some public frequency table (cf. Nation's, OUP 3000 words, Cobuilt, Brown, London Corpus)

    d) readability test (not cloze, but some formula available for passages)
    Readability formulas include Dale-Chall, Spache, Fry, Flesch Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease, FOG, SMOG, FORCAST, and Powers-Somner-Kearl.

    e) T-unit analysis (Kellog Hunt) - both error (as they are) and error free

    I can not pin point an article but you may search the web with such key words as:
    holistic evaluation, discrete items.
    There were series of papers back in '80 on essay evaluation, by John Oller, Kyle Perkins, but my memories are too weak at this time of the day.
