Where it Grows/distribution･growing country(分布・産地) †

Eastern U.S., principally Appalachian region and the states around the Great Lakes.
It likes a cool climate.

Main aspect/main feature(主な特徴) †

It's creamy white with a slight reddish brown tinge and the heartwood varies from light to dark reddish brown.
The amount of darker brown heartwood can vary significantly according to growing region.
Both sapwood and heartwood can contain pith fleck.
The wood has a close fine, uniform texture and is generally straight-grained, but it can also occur as "curly," "fiddleback," and "birds-eye" figured grains.

心材の褐色度は産地によりきわめて異なる。
辺材、心材ともふけを含むことがある。

Machining performance(加工性能) †

Hard maple dries slowly with high shrinkage, so it can be susceptible to movement in performance.
Pre-boring is recommended when nailing and screwing.
With care it machines well, turns well and glues satisfactorily.
Staines and polishes make finishes beautifull. (ハードメープルは大幅に収縮しながらゆっくりと乾燥する。
そのため狂いが出やすい。
くぎ、ねじ使用時には前もって穴をあけておくこと。
注意が必要だが、機械加工、旋盤加工に適する。
接着もしやすい｡
ステインやつや出し加工で美しく仕上がる。)

Physical properties(物理特性) †

The wood is hard and heavy with good strength properties, in particular its high resistance to abrasion and wear.
It also has good steam-bending properties.

特に摩減、摩耗に強い耐性を示す。
スチーム曲げに適する。)

Decay durability/Decay resistance(耐久性) †

Rated as slightly or non-resistant to heartwood decay.
Sapwood is liable to attack by furniture beetle.
The heartwood is resistant to preservative treatment but the sapwood is permeable.
(心材の耐朽性は全くないか、わずかのみ。
辺材は虫害を受けやすい。
心材は防腐処理が難しいが、辺材は適する。)

In America:Widely available. In Japan:Both of lumber and single panel are widely available.
The wood which has figured grain ,for example curly, fiddleback, or birds-eye figured grains,is available only single panel if you get some quantity of them.
(米国では、極めて入手しやすい。
日本国内では製材、単板とも極めて入手しやすい。
鳥眼杢、縮杢などの杢目を有するものは、まとまった量としては、単板でしか入らない。)

Flooring, furniture, paneling, kitchen cabinets, top of table,stairs, handrails, mouldings, and doors.
