クラウド市場を巡るIDC vs. Gartner（2009.May22） †

    ガートナー担当者の主張：While I get the point about some traditional IT services being advertiser supported, this represents a very small fraction of both advertising and IT functions. Corporate email moving to the cloud (or more typically, SMB and nonprofit email), can be ad-supported and this qualifies in your offset. However, most of Google’s, Yahoo’s and Microsoft’s ad revenue comes through either their home page search or through Adsense or other types of placement on millions of web sites - most of which provide no IT-related service. Also, auction-based pricing for advertising (e.g. &verb(AdWords?)) is not nearly all online advertising. Much is CPM-based and these types of ads are also used to support Web sites with IT services being supported. SaaS／Cloud市場 †

Gartner, SAAS will be a ＄53 billion market in 2009 and will grow to more than ＄150 billion in annual sales by 2013.

Merrill Lynch once forecast that the cloud computing market would reach an eye-popping US＄160 billion by 2011, a prediction that mostly drew skepticism. While sizing up the expectations for a nascent tech market is equal parts art and science, there are growing indications that ＄160 billion may indeed prove to be accurate.

アマゾンの動向 †

• EC2はアプリケーション・プレーヤーに対する求心力を増している：

  Amazon EC2, however, was designed as a platform that lets users easily size server capacity up or down. Software is delivered via what's called an Amazon Machine Image (AMI), which can contain applications, libraries, data, and configuration settings.

Pentaho, a provider of open source business intelligence software, announced Monday the Cloud Computing Edition of its software on Amazon EC2.(2009/03/23)

Earlier this month, open source ERP vendor Compiere announced its EC2 version, also called Cloud Computing Edition (a coincidence, or Amazon's suggested nomenclature?), and said the offering is ""more flexible than SaaS."

Other vendors offering some software via EC2 include IBM, Oracle, Red Hat, and Microsoft. Salesforce.com, meanwhile, has a deal with Amazon to handle some of the server and storage work for SaaS applications hosted via its own Force.com platform.

Siemens announced a proof-of-concept service in which customers could buy a communications service based on the company's &link(OpenScape?,http://enterprise.siemens.com/open/us/oucs/) unified communications software running on virtual servers in the Amazon.com cloud.

マイクロソフトもマイ・フォンでクラウド携帯サービス（←Apple &verb(MobileMe?)のまね）

Microsoft's &link(My_Phone,http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2009/02/16/microsoft-my-phone.aspx) is a Web-based service that synchs contacts, appointments, messages and multimedia content between the Internet and mobile phones.

Googleの動向 †

App Engine、ようやくJavaをサポート。企業市場への参入準備

Google's platform for cloud-based web services, &Link(App_Engine,http://code.google.com/appengine/), was also turning one, and marked the anniversary with a significant move, support for Java.

Internet giant's interest in providing enterprises with its evolving cloud computing capabilities. So what's new and what's missing in GAE for enterprises that are looking to try out the cloud?

プライバシー団体（The Electronic Privacy Information Center）、FTCにグーグルの調査を要請

The filing points to a security breach earlier this month that may have improperly exposed the files of Google Docs users to others. It asks the F.T.C. to look into the adequacy of privacy and security safeguards of Google's services and to require Google to be accountable for breaches.

It also asks the agency to force Google to make its security policies more transparent and to disclose any breaches. It also asks the F.T.C. to enjoin Google from offering cloud computing services until it establishes verifiable safeguards

The filing points to other security flaws that have been discovered with Google's services in 2005 and 2007, yet it is not clear that those flaws were exploited by anyone.

Amzon Web Serviceは、必ずしも安くない †

&verb(McKinsey?) & Company asserts that trying to adopt the cloud model would be a money-losing mistake for most large corporations. The research is being presented at a symposium on Wednesday afternoon, sponsored by the Uptime Institute, a research and advisory organization that focuses on improving the efficiency of data centers.

On that basis, according to McKinsey?, the total cost of the data center functions would be 150 a month for the conventional data center.

Clouds, Mr. Forrest notes, can make a lot of sense for small and medium-sized companies, typically with revenue of $500 million or less.

SaaSアプリは急速に普及 †

The IDC (News - Alert) survey, "Economic Crisis Response: Worldwide Software as a Service Forecast Update," finds that the SaaS market will continue to grow as vendors position these offerings as right-sized, zero-capex alternatives to on-premise applications.

According to the research, 76 percent of U.S. organizations will use at least one SaaS-delivered application for their business in 2009. Also, about 45 percent of U.S firms will spend at least 25 percent of their IT budgets on SaaS applications this year. The corresponding figure in 2008, according to IDC, was 23 percent.
