Widespread throughout the Eastern U.S.
The white oak group comprises many species, of which about eight are commercial.

Main aspect/main feature(主な特徴) †

White Oak is similar to European Oak at color and aspect.
The sapwood is light-colored and the heartwood is light to dark brown.
White oak is mostly straight-grained with a medium to coarse texture, with longer rays than red oak.
White oak therefore has more orderly grains.
(ヨーロピアンオークと色、外観が相似。
辺材は淡色、心材は淡褐色から濃褐色。一般に木目は通っており、木肌は中程度から荒い。
レッドオークより放射組織が長いため、木理が整っている。)

Machining performance(加工性能) †

White oak machines well, nails and screws well although pre-boring is advised.
Since it reacts with iron, galvanized nails are recommended.
Its adhesive properties are variable, but it stains to a good finish.
The wood dries slowly,need carefully to avoid split.
It has high shrinkage, so it can be susceptible to movement in performance.
(機械加工しやすく、ねじ、釘にも適するが、穴あけ加工を事前にすることを勧める。
鉄分に反応するので、メッキ加工した釘の使用が望ましい。
接着性能は不安定だが、ステイン、つや出し加工できれいに仕上がる。
材はゆっくり乾燥し、割れを避けるために注意が必要。
収縮が大きく、狂いが出やすい。)

Physical properties(物理特性) †

A hard and heavy wood with strong bending and crushing strength, low in stiffness, but very good in steam bending.
Southern WhiteOak? has a broad age range and is frequently more hard and heavy than Northern White Oak.
(重硬で、曲げに強く、破壊にも強く、剛性は低い。しかし、スチーム曲げに優れる。
サザンホワイトオークは年齢幅が広く、ノーザンホワイトより重硬であることが多い。)

Decay durability/Decay resistance(耐久性) †

The heartwood is resistant to decay, extremely resistant to preservative treatment, and the sapwood is moderately resistant to treatment.
(心材は耐朽性あり。
心材は非常に防腐処理が難しいが、辺材は中程度。)

Availability(入手状況) †

In America:Readily available but not as abundant as red oak.
In Japan:extremely available for variable quality and specific as lumbers and single panels

日本ではさまざまな品質、仕様で、製材や単板として極めて入手しやすい。)
