Main aspect/main feature(主な特徴) †

The sapwood is white and may contain brown streaks while the heartwood may be pale to light brown.
It is a diffuse porous wood with a coarse texture.
The wood is generally straight-grained and contains relatively few defects.
Cottonwood is a true poplar, and therefore has similar characteristics and properties to aspen and european poplar.
辺材は褐色の条が入ることもあるが白色で、心材は薄い褐色から淡褐色。 散孔材で、木肌は荒い。
木目は一般に通っており、材面の欠点は比較的少ない。
ポプラの一種であり、アスペンやヨーロピアンポプラに通じる特徴をもつ。

Machining performance(加工性能) †

General machinability is fair, although tension wood is frequently present and can cause a fuzzy surface when cut, which in turn will require additional care when finishing.
The wood glues well and has good resistance to splitting when nailing and screwing.
It dries easily but may still have a tendency to warp, with slight movement in performance ,so is defective stability.
一般的に機械加工ができるが、しばしばあて材があり、切削すると材面が羽毛立つため、仕上げに手間がかかることがある。
接着剤に適し、釘、ねじを使用しても割れにくい。
乾燥しやすいが、乾燥後もくるいやすく、安定性に少々欠ける。

Cottonwood is relatively light in weight.
The wood is soft, weak in bending and compression, and low in shock resistance.
It has no odor or taste when dry.
比較的軽量で軟らかい。
曲げ、圧縮、衝撃も低い。
乾燥すると無味無臭となる。

Decay durability/Decay resistance(耐久性) †

Non-resistant to decay.
耐朽性はない。

In Japan:Limited available for the region.
米国内では、製材、単板とも広く普及している。
日本国内では、地域によって限られる。

Furniture, furniture parts, millwork and mouldings, toys and kitchen utensils.
Specialized uses are Venetian blinds, shutters, and caskets (in America).
家具、家具部材、内部造作およびモールディング、玩具、台所用品。
特に(米国内では)ベネチアンブラインド、よろい戸など。
