We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?

キリスト教式の結婚式で必ずといっていいほど歌われる讃美歌「いつくしみ深き」(原題:WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS)

この曲を作詞したのはアイルランド人ジョセフ・スクライヴェン。彼は大変恵まれた家庭に生まれ育ちました。

トリニティ大学を卒業後、クリスチャンの素敵な女性と出会い、二人は愛し合い結婚の約束をします。結婚式の前日、彼女は友人達とボートに乗っていると突然暴風が吹き寄せ彼女の乗っていたボートは横転し友人達は助かったものの、彼女だけが命を落としてしまいます。

その連絡を受けたジョセフは深い悲しみ、失望のどん底に突き落とされます。そのような苦しみの中でまず彼がとった行動は、最も良き友イエス・キリストの元にひざまずき祈る事でした。苦しく激しい祈りの中で全ての苦しみをイエスにゆだねた時に、イエスから力強い慰めと平安を受け取り、その苦しみの中から彼は立ち上がります。

この時からジョセフは主イエス・キリストに彼の生涯を全て捧げる人生の歩みが始まります。

カナダのポートホープに移住し、そこでイエスキリストを伝えるため献身的に働き、「ポートホープの良きサマリヤ人」と呼ばれるほどでした。　彼の母がアイルランドで闘病生活をしている時、ジョセフが愛する母を何とか慰めたいと書き送った詩。それが、"WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS" です。

今もその詩は私達がどのような状況にあろうと、イエスは慰め励ましを与える最高の友であることをのべ伝えています。
