Throughout Eastern U.S., but principal commercial region is the Middle west states.
It is a one of the rarely tree species that are done both of the tree planting and spontaneous regeneration.(訳が不安)

Main aspect/main feature(主な特徴) †

The sapwood of walnut is creamy white, while the heartwood is light brown to dark chocolate brown, occasionally with a purplish cast and darker streaks.
Walnut can be supplied steamed, to darken sapwood.
The wood is generally straight-grained, but sometimes with wavy or curly grain that produces an attractive and decorative figure.
辺材は乳白色。
心材は薄褐色から濃褐色で、時折紫がかっていたり、濃い色のすじが入る。
辺材の色を濃くするためにスチーム処理を行ってから出荷することもできる。
木目は一般に通っているが、ときには美しく、装飾的な波状杢や縮(ちぢみ)杢などが入ることもある。

Machining performance(加工性能) †

Walnut works easily with hand and machine tools, and nails, screws and glues well.
It holds paint and stain very well for an exceptional finish and is readily polished.
It dries slowly, and care is needed to avoid kiln degrade by artificial seasoning.
Walnut has good dimensional stability.
機械加工、手作業ともにしやすい。
釘やねじ、接着に適する。
ペンキやステインに極めてよく馴染み、つや出し加工で美しく仕上がる。
乾燥は遅く、人工乾燥による劣化を避けるために注意が必要。
安定性はよい。

Walnut hardwood is hard and heavy ,with medium density, moderate bending and crushing strengths and low stiffness.
It has a good steam-bending classification.
重硬で、密度、曲げ、破壊強度は中程度。
剛性は低い。
スチーム曲げ分類では上位。

Decay durability/Decay resistance(耐久性) †

Rated as very resistant to heartwood decay, it is one of the most durable woods even under conditions favourable to decay.
Sapwood liable to attack by powder post beetles.
心材の耐朽性は非常に強い。
悪条件でも腐れに最も強い樹種のひとつ。
辺材は虫害にあいやすい。

In America:Reasonable availability with regional limitations.
In Japan:Both lumber and single panel reasonable availability.
米国内では、地域的にはばらつきはあるが、適度に入手しやすい。

A favored wood for using in contrast with lighter-colored species.
